Types of Qualifications and Institutions

Following types of Diploma and Degree qualifications are offered by the post-secondary education provider institutions for International students:

Diploma: UG Diploma is a qualification awarded on the basis of one or two year successful completion of study in Canadian Institutions.

Advanced Diploma: Normally, this is a 3 years program after 12th standard and some of which may lead to a Bachelor's Degree.

Bachelor's Degrees: This is usually a four year qualification awarded by Universities/ University Colleges/ Community Colleges and lead to graduate level studies.

Post Graduate Diplomas / Certificates: These programs may include co-op terms which provide full-time opportunities to gain practical experience along with theoretical studies. A student is eligible for a co-op term which is for one semester or more, if he enrolls for a Bachelor's Degree of 3 or 4 years duration.

Master's Degree: It is for 1.5 - 2 year duration and can be pursued normally after a 4 years Bachelors with minimum 65%.

Doctorate or PhD: This is a research based qualification above the Master's Degree level and generally requires three to five years to complete.

Types of Post-Secondary Institutions:

Community Colleges & Technical Institutes: They typically have more practical/ technical related syllabi, with small class size, a greater ratio of laboratory space to classroom space, and an interactive teaching style. Attending a community or technical college for the first two years instead of a 4 year long degree at university is a popular option for international students. It allows one to prepare for a career or to prepare for transfer to complete bachelor's degree from the college or university.

University Colleges: As a component of the Canadian University system, University Colleges offer students a choice of either university degree programs or the more practical-oriented college diplomas and certificates.

Universities: Canadian Universities are majorly public funded and as a result, offer consistently high quality education at lower tuition rates for International students as compared to their counterparts in other developed countries. They offer a wide range of courses and degrees from Undergraduate to Doctorate including certificate and professional degrees.
